1. Here is our target, completely defenceless and unaware of what is awaiting her. The first step here is to jack up the front end of the vehicle and make absolutely certain it is supported. You could be doing a lot of pulling and pushing and the last thing you need is your vehicle sliding and landing on you.

2. This is the standard HR drum brake front end (drivers side) once the wheel is removed. You should be able to slide the drum off towards yourself but sometimes they can be hard to remove. If they are hard then try using some leverage like a couple of large screwdrivers.

3. To check if the brake cylinder is leaking you can lift its rubber dust cover and check underneath for moisture, this one is obviously in need of replacement because even on this poor quality picture you can see the effect of leaking brake fluid on the component.

4. Stepping back from the job, this is the brake setup of the front passenger side. The center grease cap is removed to expose the split pin and nut, this needs to be removed and then the whole center hub can be slid off.

6. We first remove the self adjusting plate. There is a pin running from the back of the brake through the brake shoe into a U shaped clamp, if you push on the top of the clamp you can then twist the pin and it will then allow you to remove the clamp, once this is done the self adjusting plate should be able to be removed without a problem.
