Tuning by distributor is an easy operation, first we loosen the bolt pointed to in the picture.

Next all we have to do is turn the distributor one way or the other until we are happy with the tone of the motor, after that you retighten the bolt and should take it for a test drive. A few degrees of alteration could mean the difference between a motor running well and it pinging under load or choking under fuel at speed.

Tuning at the carby can be done using the two screws pictured, if the car is running too low at idle you can either adjust the timing or adjust the idle using the idle screw, with the motor running simply screw it in a small amount and you'll notice the car will run faster.

The air/fuel mixture screw (right hand arrow, ignore the green text) is a good one to play with, before adjusting though, take note of its position. If you change this too much it may start blowing smoke, which means it is running too rich and needs to be changed back some. Adjusting this screw will change how the car runs at all levels.

You can also check the butterfly is returned to neutral position, if the spring wire is bent or has slipped through the locking screw then the butterfly may not be ruturning properly and the car will not be getting enough air.
