Fitting Front and Rear Retractable Belts (bench seat front)

Fitting of retractable and non-retractable belts to a 6 seater sedan (bench seat front).

This work guide deals with the fitting of retractable belts to the front and rear of a 6 seater sedan (bench seat front), I had to do this because of a rapidly growing family.

The first thing you'll need is some Klippan belt kits, you can get these from many auto retailers or rare spares. The kits I used are:
K2258R - Front or rear lap non-retractable belt kit (red)
K2255R - Front lap sash retractable belt kit (red, vertical mount)
K2256R - Rear lap sash retractable belt kit (red, horizontal mount)
The last letter in the serial is the colour designation, so these are naturally red.
So being a bench seat front the car gets 6 kits to keep it a 6 seater. The front gets K2255R on the pillars and K2258R in the center and the rear gets the 3 sets of K2256R on the parcel shelf.

This is an example of what they are replacing, the belts were starting to fray and look very unsafe (and unroadworthy) indeed.

The first thing to do at the front is remove the bolts that run into the tunnel just behind the front seat, these will currently hold any seat belt buckle strap you already have.

The base of the pillar is another mounting point for the belts and will need to be removed.

The last mounting point for the belts is the top of the pillar. On older models (the 1966 HR and earlier) belts were sometimes mounted through the pillar, i.e. the bolt head was visible outside the car (most early models didn't even need front seatbelts so this may not be the case if the car has been previously upgraded). On these cars be careful when tightening the bolt back up to not overtighten it, as this can start to pull the bolt through the pillar.

This is the bolt removed at the tunnel behind the front seat, they usually used a locknut but generally everything is so stiff after being untouched for so long that the whole lot will unbolt easily enough.

With the bolt on the tunnel removed you can now pull the old buckle belt through the seat and then push your new one through to replace it. This can be a difficult job so take your time and expect frustration, sometimes it's easy and sometimes it's hell to get the belts through.

This image shows the new belt through the seat and ready to be mounted to the tunnel again. I found the bolts in the kit were correct for the HR, I'm not sure about other models but since they were correct for the HR I replaced all the old bolts with new ones from the kit where possible.

The kit instructions show how to place the bolt and washers through the buckles, this is to allow them to swivel. Don't bolt it up yet however as you need to adjust its length.

Before bolting the buckle up you need to sit in the front of the car and check the buckle against your hip to make sure it's not too long and not too short, you can then adjust it at the bottom end if required. I find that having the buckle right next to your hip is comfortable.

Time to remove the rest of the belt, I started at the base of the pillar.

Next I did the mount at the top of the pillar.

This photo shows the bolt setup of the 66 HR, as these cars were assebled before the safety upgrade they simply drilled a hole through the pillar and used this setup to mount them. With the 67 HRs onwards the cars were assembled with the belt mounts in place so no external nut was seen.

The kit comes with plenty of bolts and swivel washers to do the job.

At the top of the pillar I used the original bolt as it is stepped size, I then used the washers from the kit as when the bolt is tightened up these washers will allow the upper mount to swivel.

Once it's in position and bolted up the mount has a cover that will hide the bolts from view.

The retractor unit will come with a small peg in it that stops the belt from retracting while your trying to work on it. You just remove the peg once the unit is mounted.

At the bottom of the pillar the belt retractor needs to be mounted along with the plate that holds the bottom end of the belt. In this image however please note that I have the retractor upside down, the belt needs to come out of the retractor on the inner side to the pillar i.e. the mounting bolt is below it.

This image just shows how the plate that holds the bottom of the belt needs to be mounted, it is held by the same bolt that holds the retractor assembly and points up at an angle so that the belt "flows" up towards your lap.

The retractor assemblies are gravity driven, so if the unit isn't flat it won't work, it'll lock the gears and not retract, this is why on retractable belts you need to pull them forward a little to get them to slide back.

If you look closely at this image you'll see the orange gears inside the unit locked by the white plastic tooth from below, this allows the belt to pull forward but not retract.

There is very little space between hte retractor and the front seat, even on buckets you'll likely lose a small amoutn of travel in you seat movement. If you need your seat mounted back as far as possible you may need to mount the retractor to the floor and run it through another guide mounted where this retractor is currently mounted, you will however need a horizontal mounting kit instead of a vertical kit to do this and I have no idea how it would go as I've never done it.

You'll need to push the buckle through with the drivers buckle and either mount them to the same point or put another bolt through to the tunnel.

The buckle will need to go through next to the current passengers buckle and the clip belt through where the drivers buckle goes.

Moving to the back seat now we use the K2256R belts, rear retractable lap sash seatbelt with buckle. We will have 3 of these on the back seat.

The kit includes instructions, the buckle and lower section of the belt, the retractor and upper section of the belt and a cover is supplied for the retractor. There is also a bag of mounting bits like bolts, washers and a mounting plate.

The first thing I did was look for a mounting point for the passengers side belt, I'll be using the existing center mounting points for the buckle end (there was originally a center lap belt in this car). If you currently have no belts in the back you'll need to drill all the mounting holes, you'll also look into the correct sized bolts and plates to use in your state as seat belts do have regulations in what is required to mount them, you will need to mount a reinforcement plate below the car and weld a nut to it for the bolt to screw into. Generally the center points will be equivalent to the front points and mounted on or very near the tunnel on either side.

I found some decent sized reinforcement plates at Bunnings and bought a heap for this job, the center hole was too big but I later bought other plates and bigger washers to put between the bolts and these plates.

At the bottom of the tire well on either side is a good mounting point for the belts, I kept them roughly directly below the retractor but also in from the clip that the back seat mounts to by an inche or so. Using the plate I bought I used it as a guide for the drilling of the hole for the bolt.

On top of the parcel shelf I've mounted the retractor, I put it a fair way towards the side of the car (in 2 or 3 inches) and as far back as possible (in about an inch). It's currently shown facing directly forward but I'll later change that to face inwards so that the retractor works better.

On top and below the parcel shelf I've used the mounting plates, I also later used the smaller mounting plates and larger washers to spread out the load more. I doubled up on the mounting plates for the parcel shelf retractors as I considered it more safe to have them on both sides of the steel.

In the wheel arch I used another plate to mount the belt, so one either side of the steel again as extra reinforcement. By all rights you only need one on the side where the nut is but I am more confident in the support of one either side.

Again the retractors come with a clip to stop the unit from retracting the belt when you're trying to mount it, once the belt is mounted you can remove it.

The center mounting point on the parcel shelf is a little more difficult, generally you need enough space so that the belt will flow over the passengers shoulder without biting into their neck but with all the holes in the parcel shelf (factory speaker mounts?) and the grooves for reinforcement it's hard to find enough free metal. I ended up mounting over one of the grooves and so again used a plate on top and a plate below to get more strength from the mounting.

P1000337.JPG

Underneath the parcel shelf on the center mounting point I had to run the reinforcement plate across the ridge in the shelf, this didn't seem to hurt the mounting in any way though and still felt strong. If you weren't confident about it you could always stack up the other edge of the plate to come in line with the hieght of the ridge on its other side.

The bottom mounting point for the center belt is on the drivers side of the tunnel. This image shows the passenger side and center belts mounted. The bottom mounting point for the center strap was a newly drilled point, I didn't want too many straps mounting to the one point and figured the main straps should all have their own upper and lower mounts.
