EJ smash repair

I normally will not do Insurance work as Insurance assessors today have absolutely no idea what is involved - nor do they accept the effort and expense that has to go into older cars. This EJ wagon was side swiped in a car park by a non caring Asian driver who laughed at the unfortunate owner and said it was only an old car. We set about to do a minor full Monty retso on the affected panels.

The damage was actually a lot worse than this but I have kicked out most of the damage. The quarter panel copped it as well, although the dents are not obvious here. We prepared some other doors while we were waiting for this job to turn up - thus keeping the turn-around time for the whole exercise down to a week....

While Jake continued with negotiations with his insurance assesor - we hooked into the task at hand. Jake supplied the back door and I sourced a mint front one. This door appeared to only have minor rust and a few small dents- but.....

And this is why you cant just bog up what first appears to be a minor rust spot... All that rust needs to be gone. A quick trip inside the blast cabinet saw to this rust....

After sandblasting the rusted areas a new patch is fabricated and welded in. The old peice is kept for checking shape as well as evidence that the repair has been carried out.

This door is much happier now. Prior to priming we applied the required thin skim of final glaze filler over the beaten areas. The rust repaired area got as thin skim of glass first to make sure it was well sealed off from any futere moisture that might try and make its way through....

The quarter had to be fully stripped back to bare metal in order to address the surface rust under all the previous repairs. Jake has done an astounding job in my opinion in welding in new sections... It was just unfortunate that he chose to paint the car in acrylic - as it is letting surface rust to reform under all the nicely prepared paint....

In the booth and ready for paint- Graham decided it was simplier to repaint the entire side - with a blend out in the front.
