Oil is "T"ed off at the pressure sender unit and routed to the filter. Only a small volume of oil is re-directed to the filter.

Oil returns via the rocker cover. Instructions suggest returning oil via a tapped fitting on the sump. I prefered to keep it visible and away from harm.

You can also buy a double cartridge model (for trucks). Replacing the filter is pretty simple and mess free.
