Dialing in a cam isnt hard. The camcard that comes with the cam will usualy show the lift @ TDC in my case its 0.039 @ TDC. I use 2 dial gauges with magnetic bases and a solid lifter fitted to N0:1 intake.

The gauge reading N0:1 piston is set to zero at the beggining of TDC. The other dial gauge reads the lift of the lifter sitting on the intake lobe of number 1. This gauge is set to zero with the lifter sitting on the back of the lobe ie no lift.

Adjustable timing gears are a must. Its not often a cam is correct with std gears. As you can see this cam needed to be set -2 to get the correct reading
