How to assemble a Powerglide

A brief look into how to assemble a 2 speed Powerglide for street use. Currently under construction, so please be patient as I am pressed for time to upload pictures.

Start by cleaning everything. all parts housing etc. remove all seals and old gaskets. I use caustic soda in a powdered form, mixed with hot water to clean alloy. works a treat.

fit the reverse piston into the housing with springs and retainer plate ready for circlip.

compress retainer plate and fit the circlip

fit the reverse friction plates and steel plates. drop in the reverse ring gear. note; soak friction plates in oil first. dont forget the needle bearing.

replace the friction plates and steels in the drum, seals on the piston and check for any wear on the hub

install planetary gear set.

replace drum piston seals, lubricate and fit to clutch drum. add springs retaining plate, compress and fit circlip.

fit input shaft into drum and install drum assembly. don"t forget the wedding band.

check pump for wear, replace if necessary

use a large hose clamp to locate the two halves of the pump before tightening the bolts. replace the sealing rings.
