The new light Date: 29/10/07 Here's the new light I bought off eBay for about $30. Not in bad condition. I decided to put one in because they look better, and are more functional!
Under the covers Date: 29/10/07 Here's the assembly with the cover removed. There's a buld holder in the middle for the main cabin light (missing the bulb in this picture).
Underneath Date: 29/10/07 Here's a picture of the assembly from the back. This is the side which will attach to the roof of the car. The wire on the left is the earth, the other wire is the +12V. You can see that the 12V wire supplies juice to all the bulbs.
Out with the old Date: 29/10/07 You can see from this picture that the standard cabin light is hard wired in - no connectors to unplug - so you need to cut the wires! In order to remove the light from the roof, you need to bend three little tabs straight, and then the light comes off. You'll see the tabs after you take off the white plastic cover. The white wire is the earth, the orange wire is +12V.
New Connectors Date: 29/10/07 In the phot you can see that I've crimped on some new connectors - just to make removal a bit easier at some later date (I'm planning on changing the headlining eventually). It makes sense to put different connectors on each wire - that way you can't accidentally plug them in the wrong way around.
Done! Date: 29/10/07 I should have taken an extra photo before this one. In order to mount the new light, you need to put the base plate of the new light against the roof support, and mark where the three holes are to be drilled. Drill the holes mount the base along the edge where two screws go, then put the chrome cover on and put in the last screw. Finally, there's another short screw to hold the other side of the chrome cover on - this last screw goes into a plastic clip on the base plate. Clear as mud?
